Mad-City Builds Team’s First 5-High
On Wednesday, September 5 Mad-City accomplished something it had never accomplished before in it’s 50 years of existence. For the 1st time in the team’s history, the Mad-City Ski Team built a 5-high pyramid on the water. To make the feet even more impressive, the 5-high was built at Law Park. Granted Mother Nature played nice with the ski team. What little wind there was came out of the northwest, but with several other boats and a multitude of swimmer’s training for the Iron Man competition, the water around Law Park was busy.
Sara Tubbs, the one of the co-show directors for the upcoming 2013 ski season said:
Even though there was only one act being performed, with only 23 skiing spots….tonight felt like a full on team practice. It was amazing the amount of people that were down at law park tonight! Most of those people made up of drivers, riders, videographers and photographers (and boy did we have a plethora!) But what was most special, were the skiers and family members there by choice, supporting and cheering us on!! In my eyes, that is whats so cool about this team….the amount of teamwork and support that goes into everything we do.
Here’s the footage of the accomplish shot from 3 different cameras… one on Kendra’s head (she climbed all the way to the top), one on Matt’s ski (he center the pyramid) and one in the boat.
Here’s an alternate video that shows just the head and ski cameras.
Finally, here are some pictures of the pyramid being built.

Mad-City in the News
This past week saw the Mad-City Ski Team in the newspaper two separate times.
On August 1st long time Mad-City member Jeff Taschwer and his family were featured in a Wisconsin State Journal article that chronicled their involvement with the ski team since 1983.
Article => Doug Moe: Ski team, new guy came a long way
Then on August 7th Mad-City was featured in the 77 Square entertainment section that features a great photo gallery of pictures taken at our August 5th show.
Article => Seen: Mad-City Ski Team
Last year, with one of the GoPro camera’s from Jim’s Photos, Jeff Taschwer took to the sky behind one of the team’s boats and flew high above Lake Monona in his kite. Watch the video from last summer to get an entirely new view of the isthmus.
Back on the Water and Making Video
The Mad-City Ski Team is back on the water celebrating our 50th year of water ski shows in Madison. Mad-City performs ski shows on Sunday nights at 6pm at Law Park on Lake Monona (click link for driving directions and parking info.) And starting on Sunday, June 17, our Junior Team will begin performing ski shows at 5:30pm on Sundays right before the main show. View our online calendar for our full schedule of when we’ll be performing.
And just like last year, we’re putting camera’s on our skiers so our fan’s can see the ski show as we the skiers see the ski show. Take a look at this video from our June 3rd show where Kendra, one of our youngest skiers, does doubles and climbs 4-tiers high in a pyramid.
On the Water at the 2011 Alumni Show
This past Sunday on September 4th, 2011, the 2011 Mad-City Ski Team held an alumni show to welcome back some of our past skiers back onto the water with us.
The team met down at Law Park at 2pm so give the alumni a chance to get back on the water before the show started.
But instead of a photo gallery of the show, we have some footage shot from on the water. And this time, we put in some places we haven’t put the camera before… it’s on the head of a backfooter, a sky skier and several jumpers, plus a few others. You’ll see some aspects of the show from a perspective you’ve never seen before. Enjoy!

Looking Around Up Top
Here’s another video filmed with a Go Pro camera. This time the camera was placed on the head of one of the 4-high girls in a pyramid we practiced at Traxler Park in Janesville, WI on August 6th, 2011 in preparation for the National Show Ski Tournament show the team will be performing on the August 13th.
The 4-high girl was part of 4-2-4 human pyramid which numbers 27 people behind the boat and she did a real good job of looking around while up there so you get a real good sense of what’s like.
Once again, the video was uploaded in HD, so feel free to use the YouTube controls in the lower right corner of the video to bump up the resolution to 720p and make it full screen.
On the Water with the Skiers
The picture above shows the view you’re use to seeing. The pyramid on the water, you, the spectator, sitting on the shore. Now many of you have seen the show from the shoreline, but very few of you have seen the show the way the skiers see the show… and that is from on the water.
With access to a GoPro water proof HD video camera, the Mad-City Ski Team is now ready to show you what we see. Our perspective, on skis, on shoulders and right behind the boat. Here are the first couple videos to show you the skiers perspective.
For those that don’t know, Mad-City’s ski site is right in the heart of Madison on the isthmus. We ski our practices and shows at Law Park right next to the Monona Terrace on Lake Monona, so some of the footage in the videos of Madison from the water are pretty impressive.
The first video features footage from the team’s July 10th home show. And during our practices and shows, things don’t always go off as planned…
The second video features footage from a practice on July 14th. With the Wisconsin State Waterski Show Tournament just a week away, we were practicing our entire show. You’ll get to see Madison from the top of a successful 4-high pyramid in this video…
Both videos are in 720p HD, so feel free to bump the quality and make it full screen (or will be soon once YouTube finishes processing them)!
